How do I fill out a manual check correctly?

Start by writing the date in the top corner, then fill in the payee's name on the "Pay to the Order of" line. Enter the payment amount twice, once in numbers and once spelled out in words, since the written amount is what your bank uses if the two ever don't match. Sign the check on the signature line to complete it. To keep your accounting accurate, record the check number, date, payee and amount in your check register or accounting software right away, so your books stay reconciled with your bank statement and nothing slips through the cracks.
